Chinmaya Mission Houston (CMH) is a unique and distinctive branch of Chinmaya Mission, founded in 1982 by resident Acaryas (spiritual teachers), Acarya Shri Gaurang Nanavaty and Acarya Smt. Darshana Nanavaty. The primary aim of Chinmaya Mission is to spread the wisdom of Vedanta and provide a platform for any seeker, of all nationalities, castes, and groups, to enrich and enable them to become positive contributors to society. Chinmaya Mission Houston follows the Vedic teacher-student tradition (Guru-Shishya Parampara) and makes available the ageless wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, the knowledge of universal oneness, providing the tools to realize the wisdom in one’s life. Vedanta, the essential core of Hinduism, is the universal science of life, relevant to all people of all backgrounds and faiths.

Vedanta inspires seekers to understand their own faith better. The Chinmaya movement aims for inner growth at individual and collective levels. The Mission offers a wide array of Vedanta study forums for all ages, promotes Indian classical art forms and operates numerous social service projects. Currently, this movement encompasses a wide range of spiritual, educational, medical, social, and charitable activities enriching the lives of thousands of people in India and abroad. “Giving maximum happiness to maximum people for maximum time” is the inspirational motto of Chinmaya Mission, which aims at uplifting people beyond selfish sectarian and parochial attitudes and activities, weaving them into a seamless world nourished by Vedantic wisdom.

Bala Vihar

In Bala Vihar, the rich cultural heritage of India (including moral values), is taught to children and youth through multiple mediums of stories, dramas, arts, crafts, and discussion at different levels according to their degree of understanding. The children are able to successfully resolve their identities in this dual culture and go on to be strong leaders with integrity and pride in their rich heritage.

Gita Chanting Competition

Pujya Gurudeva explained that the Bhagavad Gita is the “handbook for everyday living”. In order to bring this philosophy into children’s lives, the Bhagavad Gita Chanting competition was pioneered by Chinmaya Mission.

Slokathon

Chinmaya Slokathon is a voluntary, self-paced chanting program. The slokas are grouped into levels according to difficulty. The aim of this program is to encourage children to memorize and correctly chant selected slokas and stotrams from our My Prayer and Slokathon books.

Bhajana/Language Classes

India is a land of great linguistic and regional diversities. Chinmaya Mission Houston offers a unique opportunity to learn some of these languages and bhajanas with trained teachers as part of the weekend classes. Through the courses, children learn to speak and write in the language of choice and have the opportunity for musical growth.
